As much as the Bible warns and condemns sin and its consequences, few really believe it and shun away from it. God says, “Abhor what is evil” (Romans 12:9). This means to “shudder, hate or be enraged” at sin. People have a total disregard for what is right, take sin lightly, grow accustomed to it and never think of its consequences and the dept they will one day pay. I John 5:19 says, “the whole world lies in the power of the evil one.” What is your attitude toward sin? Do you love it or hate it? The proper attitude is to abhor it, hate it. But why must we hate sin?

Because we know what it can do. Sin is addicting! It wraps itself around you and will not let go. II Peter speaks of some who cannot cease from sin. They have become so accustomed to it they never think of its control over their lives. II Timothy 2:3-4 warns of its entangling qualities. If you are not a faithful Christian you are under its control. You are a slave to it. “Truly, truly, I say to you, everyone who practices sin is a slave to sin” (John 8:34). It not only causes, pain, suffering, and heart ache, it destroys one’s physical body. The one drinking alcohol destroys his brain, liver, stomach, heart, and kidneys. Worst of all, sin brings spiritual death and eternal damnation in the devil’s hell.

Because we know who is behind it. “Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour.” (I Peter 5:8). We must never mock sin and the devil. “Fools mock at the guilt offering, but the upright enjoy acceptance.” (Proverbs 14:9). We must never take satan too lightly because he will take advantage of us. We must not be ignorant of his devices (II Corinthians 2:11). Do you want to be in eternity with the old serpents, the devil?

Because we know how to overcome it. Men are not helpless to overcome sin. God through Christ’s death on the cross, has provided the way of escape from our sins. If you believe (John 8:24), repent of sins (Acts 2:38), confess Christ (Romans 10:10), and be baptized for the forgiveness of sins (Mark 16:16; Acts 22:16), you can escape the consequences of your sins. Having done so, you no longer run with the way of the world (I Peter 4:1-4). You “Abhor what is evil; hold fast to what is good.” (Romans 12:9). To do otherwise will cause you to die in your sins; and if you die in your sins, you can’t go to live with the Lord. The choice is yours! Do you hate sin?
