The New Testament tells us! Notice these verses from Hebrews, “In that He says, “A new covenant,” He has made the first obsolete. Now what is becoming obsolete and growing old is ready to VANISH AWAY.” (8:13) “For on the one hand there is an annulling of the former commandment because of its weakness and unprofitableness,” (7:18) “For the law, having a shadow of the good things to come, and not the very image of the things, can never with these same sacrifices, which they offer continually year by year, make those who approach perfect.” (10:1) “then He said, “Behold, I have come to do Your will, O God.” He takes away the first that He may establish the second.” (10:9) “For the priesthood being changed, of necessity there is also a change of the law.” (7:12) In Colossians 2:14 We read, “having wiped out the handwriting of requirements that was against us, which was contrary to us. And He has taken it out of the way, having nailed it to the cross.” “Therefore the law was our tutor to bring us to Christ, that we might be justified by faith. ²⁵ But after faith has come, we are no longer under a tutor.” (Galatians 3:24-25).

WHEN did all this take place? The Old was taken away and the New ushered in when Jesus sealed it with his shed blood on the cross of calvary. “And for this reason He is the Mediator of the new covenant, by means of death, for the redemption of the transgressions under the first covenant, that those who are called may receive the promise of the eternal inheritance. 16 For where there is a testament, there must also of necessity be the death of the testator. 17 For a testament is in force after men are dead, since it has no power at all while the testator lives.” (Hebrews 9:15-17).

What then was the purpose of the Old? “What purpose then does the law serve? It was added because of transgressions, till the Seed should come. . .” (Galatians 3:19) The seed was Christ (Galatians 3:16). The Old was only given to keep the nation of Israel “in check” until Christ came. Having come and fulfilled it, he took it out of the way and gave a new law.
