What Can We Know About the Devil?
The Bible plainly reveals everything we should know about the devil. The first thing we MUST know is that HE IS OUR ENEMY! He is set to destroy our souls and drag us down to hell with him for all eternity!
It was Satan who beguiled Eve and brought sin into the world (Genesis 3:1-7). It was Satan that tried to cause Job to curse God (Job 1:6-12). It was the Devil who tempted Christ (Matthew 4:1-11). He sought all of mankind from the beginning of creation to do evil. Jesus said there are “few” who resist the devil and obey God that they might be saved from their sins and escape the Devil’s hell (Matthew 7:12-14; Matthew 25:41).
The Bible tells us many things about the Devil. He has his own kingdom and rules over it (Matthew 12:26; 8:28; 9:34). He is the enemy of Christ and His word (Matthew 13:19, 39). He is a murderer and a liar (John 8:44), the deceiver of the whole world and the accuser of the brethren (Revelation 12:9-10). He is the tempter (Matthew 4:3), the angel of the bottomless pit (Revelation 9:11), the god and prince of this world (II Corinthians 4:4; John 16:11), the prince of the power of the air (Ephesians 2:2), the wicked one who seeks to persuade people to do evil (Matthew 13:19; John 13:2, 27). He stalks the earth as a roaring lion seeking whom he may devour (I Peter 5:8).
It is a fatal mistake to assume that Satan always identifies himself and announces his intentions. We must not be ignorant of his devices (II Corinthians 2:11). He many times stands behind a pulpit pretending to be a minister of the Lord (II Corinthians 11:13-15)! The world is filled with such pretenders! Friend, study the Bible and make sure what is being taught is the Word of God! A faithful preacher will thank you for it.
The best thing to know about the Devil is that HE CAN BE RESISTED AND OVERCOME! “nor give place to the devil.” (Ephesians 4:27). We resist him by refusing to yield to his allurements and instead, drawing close to God (James 4:7-8). This is achieved by studying his word (II Timothy 2:15), obeying the gospel (II Thessalonians 1:8), worshiping as the Bible demands (John 4:24) and serving Him faithfully (I Corinthians 15:58). God’s word and obedience to it is the only means of salvation from one’s sins (I Peter 1:22; John 8:32; Acts 2:38)
