Are Babies Supposed To Be Baptized?
Some denominations believe babies are to be baptized while others do not. What do you believe? Upon what have you based your belief?
The answer to this question is not subject to one’s feeling, opinion, pastor, council, or decree. Only God can answer this question correctly and he does so in his inspired Word toe Bible. His answer is NO.
Origen, near the beginning of the third century, was the first in church history to specifically advocate infant baptism. This unscriptural, anti-Biblical practice arose from a man-made doctrine, i.e., that all babies are born with inherited sin. Being tainted with sin they are in a lost condition and must be baptized to take this sin away. However, there is one major problem with this doctrine, there is NO BIBLE AUTHORITY for it!
Babies are totally innocent of any and all sin or guilt. They know no wrong and can commit no wrong. Jesus said of them, “. . .unless you turn and become like children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.” (Matthew 18:3). If little children are sinners from birth, would not this make Jesus say, “you must become as little deprived sinners to enter the kingdom of heaven?” But instead, “Jesus said, Let the little children come to me and do not hinder them, for to such belongs the kingdom of heaven.” (Matthew 19:14).
Ezekiel 18:20 says, “The soul who sins shall die. The son shall not suffer for the iniquity of the father, nor the father suffer for the iniquity of the son. The righteousness of the righteous shall be upon himself, and the wickedness of the wicked shall be upon himself.” Everyone is responsible for his own sins, not the sins of others.
Water baptism is only for those who have been TAUGHT. “Go therefore and make disciples of (Teach) all nations, baptizing them . . .” (Matthew 28:19). One must first BELIEVE (have faith). “Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved . . .” (Mark 16:16). CONFESSION is necessary. “. . .What hinders me from being baptized?”. . .“If you believe with all your heart, you may.”. . . “I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God.”. . . and he baptized him.” (Acts 8:36-38) REPENTANCE is required before baptism. “Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins. . . .” (Acts 2:38). A baby can do none of these things, therefore cannot be baptized!
Inherited sins is a concoction of the devil and its companion, “infant baptism,” collapses along with it for neither have any support from God.
